Monosodium Glutamate (MSG) is a flavor enhancer
commonly added to canned food, soups, processes meats, and snacks. Sometimes,
we also add MSG to our food to make it more delicious. But, you should know
that MSG is very dangerous for our health. Why MSG is so dangerous for our
health? There is some reason for it.
First,
MSG can cause weight gain. The study, reported in the August edition of Obesity examined the
association between MSG intake and weight gain in humans.
The great majority of
the participants prepared their foods at home, without use of commercially
processed foods. For the study, participants were told to add quantified
amounts of MSG when preparing their foods. After adjusting for
confounders including physical activity and total energy intake, the
researchers found that MSG consumption was positively related to increases in
body mass index. Weight gain was significantly greater in MSG users than in
nonusers.
Next, MSG is an excitotoxin that
cause brain damage. It means that it over stimulates the brain causing the
production of excessive amounts of dopamine. This creates a drug-like rush that
provides a brief sensation of well being. It is highly addictive, causing its
consumers to keep coming back for more and end up overeating. In the process,
brain cells are destroyed.
Then, MSG promotes liver inflammation and dysplasia. Journal
of Autoimmunity research found that by the age of 6 and 12 months, all MSG treated
mice developed liver inflammation and structural change. Lesions were detected
in some cases. They concluded that their results take on considerable
significance in light of the widespread usage of dietary MSG and suggested that
MSG should have its safety profile re-examined and potentially be withdrawn
from the food chain.
Furthermore, Food and Drug
Administration (FDA) has received many
anecdotal reports of adverse reactions to foods containing MSG over the
year. These reactions, known as MSG symptom complex, include:
- Headache
- Flushing
- Sweating
- Facial pressure or tightness
- Numbness, tingling or burning in the face, neck and other areas
- Rapid, fluttering heartbeats (heart palpitations)
- Chest pain
- Weakness
For that reason, it is not good if we consuming foods
which containing MSG. We must be carefull to buy prosessed and instant foods in
the market. We must keep our health with not consuming foods which containing
MSG. If we avoid foods containing MSG, we will live our life in happiness.
